Bones Folding Chair
The Bones Folding Chair began as a folding stool concept for a week long design project while in graduate school at Stanford University. A few sketches and a week in the shop created a wood and aluminum folding stool. The folding design stayed with me and now gives life to the Bones Folding Chair.
20 Year Design.
The folding stool design from 1997 stayed with me and after graduate school I worked on a folding chair design. I had the chair partially modeled in new 3D CAD software, but didn’t finish more than the legs. Fast forward 20 years and only a few sketches and a couple print outs remained. Once sketching chairs, one of the first sketches was reminiscent of the folding stool and chair design.
Novel Motion.
Creating interactions that are not expected gives the Bones Folding Chair added interest. The seat folds up as expected, but he back folds down and over the top of the seat. With the seat nested inside the folded backrest, the backrest handle is in position to lift the chair to move. When lifted by the handle, the backrest locks the folded chair.
Words from the designer...
""A chair shouldn’t lose it’s beauty because it’s function has changed. It should be as beautiful folded and stored as it is open and in use.”
