Good Day Lounge Chair
Creativity sparks creativity. The Good Day Lounge Chair was inspired by an artist recording a song in the music studio. Working with another artist, the two complimented each other’s artistic styles with a play between powerful and smooth. Once fully immersed in the music, a low-lying chaise lounge chair seemed an appropriate design direction to capture the moment. The concept was to have a thin floating seat suspended under a crossbar attached to heavier structural legs. The seat would appear light and floating, yet grounded by the leg structure. Watching the 2 artists work together it seemed appropriate to contrast their different styles within the forms of the chair.
Suspended.
The idea to have a thin structure suspended below a frame proved a difficult engineering feat. The cast aluminum seat required a structural frame to be internal to the casting to carry the load without allowing the aluminum seat to yield. Once assembled, the internal steel frame is hidden beneath the leather pads.
Comfort.
Full scale models provide ergonomic feedback and comfort and positioning. With the plywood prototype the seat angles, leg rest length and headrest position were all tested, adjusted and confirmed before moving to the actual prototype.
Words from the designer...
"People enjoy chaise lounge chairs as a way to relax and detach. They are not social chairs, but experiential chairs. The Good Day Lounge Chair derives its form from the emotions and feelings of being consumed by music.”
